In the tradition of Respighi's Fontane di Roma, this work depicts the city of Barcelona at different times of day. Trencadís is inspired by the mosaic style of the same name that the famous Spanish architect Gaudí used extensively in his buildings and architectural art. Accordingly, the instrumentation and harmonisation are very colourful, with a special role for the Catalan hymn El Virolai.
